Capacitating Security Forces for Prevention and Management of Pre- and Post-Election Related Violence Conflicts in Oromia Regional State

To prepare the security force of the region for pre-and post-election crowd control or other events likely to emerge before, during, and after the election, a training was held among polices from Jimma Town, Bale Zone, Shashemene Town, East Hararghe Zone, Woliso Town, and Arsi Zone police. From criminal investigation department, department for community policing, women and Children Affairs within the police department were given the chance to attend the training. The training took two days for Woliso and Arsi Zone and three days at Jimma Town, Bale Zone, Shashemene Town and East Hararghe Zone to successfully complete the training. Two hundred eighty-seven (287) attended six-round training sessions; of which 232 (80.8 %) were male participants and 55 (19.1 %) were female.) During the training session, much consideration was given for the meaning and purpose of electoral democracy, principles of the election, Election in Ethiopia, principles of the election, the problems observed in the Ethiopian election history, Election, and the role of security forces in the electoral process. Training would help in enhancing the capacity of the security forces of the Oromia regional state of Ethiopia to make them able to handle election-related violent conflicts in the region. Such training has a tremendous value to make ready the security forces to managing conflict violence related to elections to safeguard the private and governmental institutions from damage and even the loss of life. All respondents said that the training was relevant to them according to the response the training will help them to understand their role in policing and the protection of the citizen’s rights before, during, and after the elections and to carry out their role as preservers of peace in the context of heightened tensions during the election period; According to the evaluation meeting participant, the training helped in enhancing the capacity of security forces of the Oromia regional state of Ethiopia to make them able to handle election-related violent conflicts in the region.
